A transformational framework by Janine Shepherd.
Conscious Liminality™ is a framework born from the intersection of lived experience and scholarly inquiry. Through my own journey—from elite athlete to spinal patient, from survivor to storyteller and pilot—I discovered something profound about life’s threshold moments: those spaces where one identity has ended, but the next has not yet emerged.
Developed through decades of lived experience and formalised through my PhD research at Griffith University, Conscious Liminality™ challenges traditional views of liminality. Rather than seeing the in-between as a temporary state to endure, it invites us to engage with it consciously—to stay present in uncertainty, to meet change with curiosity, and to actively shape who we become through it.
Grounded in narrative identity theory, disability studies, positive psychology, and autoethnographic research, this framework blends rigorous scholarship with the raw, beautiful reality of human experience. It offers a roadmap not for avoiding life’s disruptions, but for finding meaning and growth within them.
The Five Transformational Processes
- Reimagining
The spark that ignites new possibility. It begins with a single question: “What if life could look different?” This process opens space for who we might become beyond who we once were. - Integration
The gentle work of weaving fragmented experiences into a coherent sense of self. Here, pain becomes wisdom, and scattered pieces of our story begin to form new patterns of meaning. - Adaptation
The practical and emotional labour of adjusting to changed realities. This stage calls on creativity, flexibility, and persistence as we learn to navigate with grace and ingenuity. - Reauthoring
The courageous act of rewriting our story. No longer defined by what happened to us, we become the authors of who we are becoming—reclaiming agency and narrative power. - Flourishing
Thriving not despite change, but because of how we have engaged with it. This is transformation made visible—where possibility crystallises into a life that exceeds what we once imagined.
These processes didn’t emerge from abstract theory—they were lived and tested in hospital corridors, airplane cockpits, and quiet moments of reflection. They continue to guide my own daily navigation through new thresholds of identity and becoming.
Who This Framework Serves
Conscious Liminality™ speaks to anyone who finds themselves in the in-between, including those navigating:
-
Disability, chronic illness, or health transitions
-
Trauma, loss, or major life change
-
Questions of identity, purpose, or belonging
-
Crossroads where the path forward feels unclear
This framework offers no false certainty—only an invitation to engage with uncertainty differently: not as something to escape, but as fertile ground for transformation.
If you find yourself asking, “Who am I now?” you are already standing in liminal space. Conscious Liminality™ offers a way to not just survive that threshold, but to grow and transform within it.
